South west update
One hat box has been emptied since my arrival into Kojonup with four sales made from the home of my gorgeous hosts, Lisa and Jamie and five pieces sold from Jones Road Emporium. Last night’s champagne showing was pretty quiet and with only one sale, so we loaded up the platters and champas and headed home to find the fellas enjoying an after work beer and lo and behold, who would have thought, it was the men that were looking for hats. The fedora’s were unpacked on the driveway and the wireless eftpos machine enjoyed some car park purchases, proving that you just never know! Today we are heading to the Kojonup Wandecla races where I will be the on-course Milliner, so fingers crossed for some interest and sales. I have also been asked to assist with judging the MENS fashion on the field, so I am sure you can hear my excitement there!!! Oh the dilema of what to wear … Today’s Wandecla is rumoured to be the last official event of it’s kind for the district so coupled with a perfect 31 degree day and lots of excitement one would presume we are in for some bubbles and fun!

The model bride
Kate Matthews has been the face of Hats by Felicity since the beginning of time … or, at least, since the inception of business. Over the years, Kate has modeled my creations on both the catwalk and in front of the camera with absolute perfection and I love her for it. In addition to being an integral part of my business Kate is also a great friend of mine and it was an incredible honour for me when, on announcement of her engagement to the infamous Daniel Wood, Kate asked if I would create her bridal headwear. Kate initially requested two separate pieces, being a headpiece and veil, with the thought that the veil could be removed after the ceremony but on creation, Kate decided to wear both for the duration of their special day and night. I couldn’t have been prouder when Kate walked down the aisle and like her family and friends, shed a tear on her entrance. I can’t thank Kate enough for promoting my wears with both the professional and personal touch that I aspired for and most of all … I thank Kate for being the amazing person and wonderful friend and with all my love and with life-long friendship I congratulate Kate and Daniel on their marriage.
I have attached pictures of Kate’s bridal headwear that includes vintage veiling on a silk covered slip-comb with curled biot feathers and four stunning Broome cultured pearls nestled within. The headpiece is a silk flower with confetti and agrete feathers. Both creations were positioned to create the illusion of one eternal piece.

On the move …
Departure day is here. I’m sitting in Broome airport, my boxes of hats and belongings are checked in and my excess baggage anxiety was laughed off by the check in staff, with boxes weighing well below my allowance. So, I didn’t need to purchase those extra kgs, however, with the amount of farewell champagnes consumed over the past few days, had they have put me on the scales the money would have been well spent! My great friend Tush is collecting me from Perth airport and Tush will no doubt experience the same temporary fear when she spots my trolly load. Tush has been a life long friend and and integral part of Hats by Felicity, playing a major role in my first ever exhibition. Tush organised the hat parade and also modelled my creations, leading the other models in the event. This was a combined exhibition with my artist friend Suzy French, from Derby. Suzy and I challenged each other to hold this event and introduce our wares to the world after a night of dutch courage wine. Our first thought when the confidence wore off was to completely forget the idea but we held each others hands and eventually did hold the exhibition of ‘Oils by Suzy and Hats by Felicity’ and neither of us has looked back since.
Well, that’s my boarding call … See you soon, Broome – this milliner is on the move …

Looking back down the track
It’s raining on my tin roof and there is something about the rain that makes us stop and reflect. I live in the tropics, therefore torrential rain at this time of the year is to be expected (and enjoyed). In fact, an annual rainfall is one of the reasons I moved to Broome, having come from drought country in central western NSW. However, drought is a yesteryear word today, as many of our friends and families now deal with floods, particularly throughout the rural and regional areas of Australia.
As the Milliner on the move, I hope to travel throughout many of these and other regional areas of our country and I look forward to sharing the stories with you along the way; and we all know there will be a few.
2010, however, kept me in WA and seeing as though I am reflecting, the attached slideshow is a snippet of my millinery creations, spotted out and about as we look back down the race track in 2010.
Welcome to 2011 everyone – I wish you all “less stress and more laughter”!

Milliner on the move
This Milliner is on the move and not only on the road but also with technology! After much encouragement, I have finally established this blog and as promised, the blog is active before my second Milliner on the move adventure.
In May this year, I embarked on the inaugral Milliner on the move trip, visiting cattle stations and townships between Carnarvon and Broome, WA. During this adventure I showcased my wears of hand made hats and headpieces to the women of the outback and the response was overwhelming.
My idea for the “Milliner on the move” soon came to fruition and is now an exciting reality as I prepare for the second Milliner on the move adventure, this time to the south of Perth, WA.
It is with great pleasure that I welcome you aboard this journey.
